Nigeria
Nigeria has a thriving Church; most of southern Nigeria is ‘Christian’ and there are millions of believers. But the other half of the country is very strongly Muslim. AIDS is a massive problem that the church is only beginning to deal with. There are lots of other social issues and problems like poverty, Streetkids and disabilities that the Church hasn’t got the resources tackle these issues. There is also a shortage of well trained pastors and church leaders and so more theological teaching is needed. This is where Mission Africa is able to help. Our main ministries are in providing the church with training and resources; we work with Bible Colleges, Streetkids homes, AIDS education and care, and providing resources for the church to grow.
About Nigeria
Streetkids
City Ministries
This is a well established ministry working with street children, the marginalised and the destitute. The ministry focuses on the centres for former Streetkids, but they have a very strong outreach programme to unreached people especially in the very poor areas of the city. GAP placement with the Streetkids centres may entail anything from simply “hanging out” with the kids, with the aim of building relationships and showing God’s love, to sports ministries, Bible studies, children’s clubs or teaching academic subjects in their school.
Special
needs
Open Doors Special Needs School
Children and young people with learning handicaps attend the Special Education Unit in Open Doors Special Education Centre. They cannot benefit from a regular school because they have a learning handicap such as mental disability, autism or other developmental disability.
Currently there are 60 pupils in this Unit. At Open Doors they are able to go to a school where they receive Special Education based on their individual needs. Opportunities exist for people to serve as a teacher / classroom assistant, physios, occupational therapists, speech therapist, and to teach vocational skills and sports.
HIV/AIDS
ADVANCE
Advance is a response by the UEC church to the problem of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. It trains churches to educate their communities about HIV and trains them to look after people in their community suffering from AIDS and to test and counsel people so they know their status.
People who are medically trained are at an advantage, but anyone who wants to help spread this programme across Nigeria is welcome to work with the team in Advance, teaching kids programmes, and teaching men and women about AIDS.
